'PROJECT GREEN T' Background

Bob Moesta, of Edutronix and The ReWired Group, brought Tom Kuhr of NEHR Speedcraft to the college to introduce Kuhr to Professor Gary Walters at Macomb Community College. Kuhr was excited about the opportunity to utilize some of MCC’s technology and Walters was excited about the opportunity to apply it to some cool projects, such as the T-Rat Formula Roadster.

The Project GT will provide a tangible real world experience to students working in a wide area of industrial technologies. Students will learn how automobiles come together by working in teams—from concept through reality—or Art-to-Part. By assembling this simple vehicle they’ll experience the day-to-day complexities of interdepartmental communications, marketing requirements, graphic design, engineering changes, assembly, manufacturing, and various levels of automation. This project shall be completed in two trimesters by a maximum of 18 students. We’ll start with ATAP, ATWD, and AUTO students, then we’ll add surrounding departments as the excitement intensifies and the project matures.

The Project GT will be powered by an LS2 V8 running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Matt Rossow of the Automotive Technology department will provide the drivetrain expertise.

Basic frame is welded and a mobile cart was constructed to move the project from department to department.
Rear axle spring brackets are done with the logo. Slot was cut to accept the horizontal gusset.

Gary built the rear perches. The vertical brackets are complete (see pix). I have to make the horizontal brackets yet.

Gary developed CNC programs for the forward ladder bars and will machine them from 2 x 4 solid billet steel.

Erick (from graphics) is busy designing the logo concepts.

May 7, 2009 - MCC Progress

It was a successful first week on the Green T. We started cutting metal this week!!! This is a major accomplishment. This means the project is officially started.

Welding: Dale Patterson and Justin Dragroo cut the rails, and tac welded the master.

CNC: Gary CNC machined the round ends and delivered back to the welding lab.

Tom Kuhr and Dave Nedock of Nehr Speedcraft, figure out how to squeeze the big motor into the little car.
Tom Shinneman of MCC, 3D scans the T body to provide all the CAD data needed to completely reverse engineer the T-Rat Formula Roadster.
Gary Walters is busy at work converting all the neat little parts from the real world into the digital world.
